I had a good drive, off the road of course in a 1966 CJ-5. This one:
It was Swiss Army, who started with the CJ-5 instead of the proper military spec, meaning there's a heater as well as a rifle holder. Hurricane engine, 3 on the floor, km/h speedo, spade and axe and can-o-gas, oh i love it. A complete hoon of an owner too, uses it as intended, and let me too. Lovely day!

I have only ever been *truly* off-roading once. It was in this, and I wasn't driving:

Well, we didn't do any rock-crawling, no mud-plugging either, so as hard-core off-roaders go, we were pedestrian. Still off the pavement though, and some of the terrain would have even troubled my 505 (has much higher ground clearance than modern sedans), let alone a normal car. So yes, i think this qualifies as off-roading.

I kind of wish the Mahindra version of these (new) was available for sale somehow.

I kinda see why you would want that, but here's the thing: this one's 50 years old next year, but for wear it barely feels 5. Of course being army surplus sold with 60.000 km on the clock helps with that, but the owner still had to rebuild the engine, and completely tune everything else up. However, he tells me it was easy to get parts, and in the 15 years since that rebuild everything remained in perfect order.
What I'm saying, that based on this thorough scientific research (=having driven one single specimen) my impression is that it isn't hard to completely rebuild one.

Nice! Those old CJ's are a lot of fun.
My father and I restored this 1971 CJ5.

That looks like the WORST seating arrangement for off-roading. Forward and back, forward and back. OOF

True. I just kind of wish they were out there in swarms, and in a four door version - both covered by the Mahindra. Cheap and new is never a bad thing.

It was fun, actually. But yeah, they are all benches on the edge facing inward, with two or three forward facing ones along the back.

I don't doubt it was fun, all I can think about is how many people must get pitched forward into the lap of their cohorts.

There are seat belts, but yeah it happens some.
